Photographing Rock Star

20060611_SNova_192smB.jpgBlue Pixel is once again providing the still photography for Rock Star as they start filming their second season. Danny Moloshok is doing the photography, and sends us some notes from behind the scenes:

"Mark Burnett Production's reality show Rock Star is back for a second season and I was lucky enough to be the still photographer again. This year it's "Rock Star: Supernova" with Tommy Lee, drummer from Motley Crue, guitarist Gilby Clarke from Guns N' Roses, and bassist Jason Newsted from Metallica looking for a lead singer.

My shoot week consists of four long days. Some days I'm shooting a concert show at CBS studios and others I'm at the Rock Star Mansion in the Hills above LA documenting the lives of the contestants. Shooting a reality show has a slight feeling of journalism since I'm always looking for a story and images that show emotion.

20060630_Episode201B_1483A.jpg It's more than just shooting cool rock moments on stage - it's really about off-stage emotion, especially when someone gets sent home or when the contestants have to fight it out over who performs what song from of a mixed selection offered to them. In my opinion, just like in a good journalistic or sports photograph, it's the personal emotion that gives production images from this show a different feeling than other Hollywood photography.
